These procedures are only to be carried out by personnel specifically authorized by Ruth Carrington. No other personnel are to touch the computers on Ruth Carrington’s desk for any reason without authorization.
1. Start with the Server at Ruth’s desk:. Select channel 1 on KVM device (black box) on desktop.
2. Turn on monitor if turned off
3. If no image seen on monitor, wiggle mouse or tap spacebar on keyboard to activate
4. Check that you are viewing the Server desktop which should be gray (not pastel green) color
5. Check PC Anywhere (PCA) icon in System Tray (lower right corner or screen, at right end of taskbar). To identify PCA icon, or other icons in system tray, position the mouse cursor over them and after a few seconds a box will open telling you the name of the application represented by the icon. PCA icon is gray when “Waiting”, green when “In Session”
5.a: If PCA icon in system tray is green (“In Session”) call David before proceeding. If David unavailable, you can end session by right clicking on icon and selecting “End Session”.
6. Locate icon on Taskbar for “Net Watcher” and, if necessary, left click on it to bring to foreground/active window. You will see a list of computers.
6. a If any computers have a number other than “0” for “Open Files”, go to that computer and close the application which has the files open (It will tell you the name of the application to close)
6.b After closing those applications with open files, return to the server. Net Watcher is still “active window”. Chose “View|Refresh” from drop down menu. Refreshed view should now show the shares open with “0” files. If there are no active shares, then it may simply show a blank field. This is normal and acceptable also. If so, you can close Net watcher application.
7. Go to start menu and select “Shut down”
8. A window will open with several “Shut down” options, if necessary select “Restart:” and then hit “OK”
9. You will probably (but not always) get a message box opening telling you that one or more computers are connected to this machine and asking if you want to continue to shut down. Chose “Yes”
10.. Hopefully the machine will then close Windows and re-start.
11.. If all is working properly, it will shortly reinitialize itself and log itself in etc. Hopefully you will NOT need to type in passwords or anything. It should simply fill them out and start working.
12. Wait for the entire desktop on the Server to restore itself. When it does, you can then proceed to re-start ALL the other computers in the office. THIS MUST NOT BE STARTED UNTIL THE SERVER COMPUTER IS PROVED TO BE BACK UP AND RUNNING.
13.. Do not forget to switch the KVM to Channel 2 (P-266/green desktop) so as to enable you to re-start computer P-266 which shares keyboard/video/mouse with Server. Be sure you know which computer you are working with at ALL times. There is an indicator on the KVM switch to assist you.
14. Some of the client computers might not automatically supply the network log-in password and will need it entered manually. If so, the password is “none”
15. If you receive an error message on startup from one of the clients that it is “Unable to connect to network drive” or some such, stop what you are doing and call David deForrest. Do not clear the box and proceed.
